Norwegian to stop flying from Ireland to US and Canada

TUI says robust business outweighs 737 MAX grounding upholds outlook

"Compounded by the global grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and the continued uncertainty of its return to service, this has led us to make the hard decision to discontinue all six routes from USA and Canada to Dublin, Cork and Shannon from September 16".

Norwegian announced in 2015 that it planned to begin transatlantic flights between Cork and Boston.

Norwegian says their decision comes following a review of transatlantic operations, in the wake of the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that it was to use from Shannon to Stewart and Providence Airports.

Norwegian is to end its transatlantic flights between Ireland and North America from September 15th.

"We are assisting customers by ensuring they can still get to their destination by rerouting them onto other Norwegian services".

Responding to the announcement Mary Considine, acting CEO of the Shannon Group, said: "We are disappointed that Norwegian Air International will cease all transatlantic services into Irish airports, including Shannon, from September 15".

The carrier will continue to offer scheduled services from Dublin to Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen as normal.

The airline says the decision reflects uncertainty about when or whether the troubled Boeing 737 Max will return to the air.

Major U.S. airlines have canceled flights into November as a result of the Max grounding.

"It's clear that the 737 Max development impacted the Norwegian economic model, and in turn they made a significant announcement today throughout the northeast", said Fischer.

Shares in Norwegian closed down 2.9%.

Aviation services company John Menzies (MNZS.L) also said on Tuesday that it had taken a hit from the 737 Max scandal.

And it dropped the plane from its schedule until early January - two months longer than American - to allow time for pilot retraining and avoid disruptions for holiday-season travelers.

Chief executive Fritz said, "Despite the challenging environment in 2019 to date, our underlying business remains robust, and we expect to deliver a solid performance in 2019, which, however, will not match the prior year's result, as expected due to the grounding of the 737 Max".

If all goes as planned, the 737 MAX could fly again in December or January 2020.

Tui, which used to operate under the name Thomson in the United Kingdom, said issues with the 737 Max cost it €144m (£134m) in the third quarter alone.
