Ebola has been spreading in eastern Congo since August 2018 in an outbreak that has now killed at least 1,800 people. Almost 29% of the patients who were given REGN-EB3 died, whereas close to 34% of the patients who were treated with mAb114 faced death.

But Ilunga resigned from his post last month and has since been replaced by Jean-Jacques Muyembe - director of Congo's National Institute of Biomedical Research - who is thought to be more receptive to the Janssen vaccine.

The rates for Zmapp and remdesivir were 49 per cent and 53 per cent respectively.

The NIH, Democratic Republic of Congo health authorities and the World Health Organization hailed the "extraordinary team of individuals who have worked under extremely hard conditions to carry out this study", as well as the patients and their families.

Two of four Ebola treatment drugs have been determined "more effective" than the others and will be the only ones used on patients going forward, the World Health Organisation announced on Monday.

According to the Post report, the two new therapies were tested in a multi-drug, controlled trial since November previous year.

The DRC is grappling with the world's second largest Ebola epidemic on record, with more than 1,800 lives lost and over 2,600 confirmed infections since the outbreak was declared on August 1, 2018, according to the central African nation's ministry of health.

During a trial, survival rates among Ebola patients treated with REGN-EB3 and mAb114 were higher compared to other drugs.

The current outbreak in the DRC is the worst on record after an epidemic that struck mainly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone between 2014 and 2016, leaving more than 11,300 people dead.

The study is co-sponsored by the DR Congo's Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) and the U.S's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); carried out by an global research consortium coordinated by the World Health Organization; and supported by four pharmaceutical companies (MappBio, Gilead, Regeneron, and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics).

Mike Ryan, head of the WHO's emergencies program, said the trial's positive findings were encouraging but would not be enough on their own to bring the epidemic to an end.

"Today's news has put us another step to saving more number of lives". Efforts to control it have been hampered by militia violence and some local resistance to outside help.

Jeremy Farrar, director of Britain's Wellcome Trust research charity, said the development would undoubtedly save lives.

They saved about 90 percent of patients with low levels of infection, according to preliminary data released from the trial.

The successful trial moves EBOLA into the category of preventable and treatable diseases.

Some 681 patients at four separate treatment centres in Congo have already been enrolled in the Congo treatment clinical trial, Fauci said.

Palm also examined a combination of three monoclonal antibodies developed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, called REGN-EB3, which is harvested from Ebola-infected mice with "humanized" immune systems.
