3 dogs dead after playing in pond overrun with blue-green algae

Three dogs die hours after swimming in pond with toxic algae

The dog owners, Melissa Martin and Denise Mintz, shared a Facebook post the next day, with photos of their three dogs - West Highland terriers Abby and Izzy and a larger canine named Harpo - from their time at a pond in Wilmington, just hours before all three pets died. We need your prayers.

Heartbroken pet owner Melissa Martin shared a heartbreaking post on Facebook telling how she and her friend Denise had brought their pups on a playdate only for the bad tragedy to unfold.

They quickly rushed her off to a veterinary hospital, but on arrival another of the dogs - Westie Izzy - began having seizures too.

In Wilmington, North Carolina, three dogs died after frolicking in a pond, while another succumbed after a swim in Lake Allatoona, Georgia.

Veterinarians say the process can happen within 15 to 30 minutes.

As of August 8, there are more than a dozen locations with blue-green algae in North Dakota.

On top of that, it can be hard to detect where algae blooms have formed. Nitrogen and phosphorus enter bodies of water as a result of human activities, such as agriculture, imperfect wastewater systems, fossil fuels, fertilizers, and the use of soaps and detergents containing those nutrients. The toxic algae is usually blue, green, brown, or red, with a slimy texture and often a frightful smell, the EPA noted.

"The hardest thing I have ever done is hold these incredible animals and watch their lives slip away", she added. "It just kind of behooves anybody that sees algae in a lake, in a pond, that they'd probably want to be cautious and just not expose themselves to it or to their pets". They've set up a fundraiser to purchase signs and erect them in front of contaminated water to prevent further pet deaths.

They told CNN they thought the cyanobacteria they saw in the pond was flower blooms.

Now, the two owners hope that their deaths can help educate other dog owners about the dangers of letting dogs into water where blue-green algae is present.

The campaign's goal was to raise $2,000, however it has already raised more than $3,000.

"We are now on a mission to put signs at every body of water that can have this deadly bacteria".

Some of the health complications dogs can experience include, lethargy, lack of appetite, tremors or seizures.

"Remove from the situation and then hose them down with fresh water, try to provide some fresh drinking water to try to dilute out some of that toxin", Gruchow said.
