Turkey bombs Kurdish region in Iraq after diplomat killed

A Turkish diplomat and two Iraqis were killed on Wednesday in an armed attack on a restaurant in the Kurdish-controlled region of Iraq, according to the Turkish and Iraqi governments.

On Wednesday afternoon, gunmen fired on Turkish consulate workers in a restaurant in Ainkawa, a northern Erbil neighbourhood that hosts numerous restaurants and the Turkish consulate.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK - listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union - has been responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The US embassy offered its condolences to the Turkish mission after the "heinous" attack, calling for "the defence and safety of foreign diplomats and diplomatic missions in Iraq".

The prime minister has said he is looking at strengthening the Kurdish regional government's relationship with Turkey. The PKK is classified as a "terrorist" group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union because of the three-decade insurgency it has waged against the Turkish state.
