White House holds social media summit

President Trump is an avid social media user but he has also come down hard on Big Tech. He's hosting a social media summit on Thursday and some of his biggest supporters on social media will attend

President Trump is hosting a social media-focused summit at the White House on Thursday afternoon, which is expected to examine bias at some of the country's biggest technology companies.

Other eyebrow raising attendees include James O'Keefe, the guerrilla journalist whose group Project Veritas tried to trick reporters at the Washington Post by planting a source who told the paper that she had been impregnated as a teenager by failed Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore; Charlie Kirk, the founder of the right-wing student group Turning Point USA who sometimes posts misleading information on social media; and Benny Johnson, the journalist-turned-activist who was sacked for plagiarism by BuzzFeed and demoted at the Independent Journal Review for violating company standards. "If I put it out on social media, it's like an explosion".

Judd Deere, a White House spokesman, said the event was a platform for Trump to meet with social media personalities.

Trump and conservatives have been ramping up their criticism of big tech. They said Trump might join other services but won't leave Twitter.

Regulation may be on the cards as Mr Trump warned he is "directing my administration to explore all regulatory and legislative solutions to protect free speech and the free speech rights of all Americans". In March, for example, he said the companies had engaged in "collusion" and worked in opposition to a "certain group of people that happen to be in power, that happen to have won the election". "Enforcing basic standards of decency on social media isn't censoring conservative speech".

Trump has repeatedly claimed that firms such as Facebook, Google and Twitter - who were not invited to the summit - discriminate against him and his supporters, even though his own Twitter account has almost 62 million followers.

The event is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. ET at the White House, according to an invite Hoft shared on Twitter. President Trump mentioned - in a tweet, for sure - that the event might possibly maybe maybe maybe be specializing in "dishonesty, bias, discrimination and suppression practiced by sure corporations".

If I put it out on social media, it's like an explosion: Fox, CNN, insane MSNBC.

Mr Trump made social media a key part of his 2016 presidential campaign but he and other Republicans have long claimed that online platforms employ tactics to silence their voices, allegations that major social media companies have denied. We have seen no public response from any of the social media giants and they would be wise to do so with care.
