US service member killed in Afghanistan

One American killed in Afghanistan, military says

The U.S. servicemember's death on Saturday comes less than a month after two American troops were killed by small-arms fire in southern Uruzgan province. The group often embellishes details of its attacks, including USA casualty counts.

Four members of the Afghan security forces were killed and 20 people wounded, including civilians, the ministry said.

Terrorists attacked a government compound in the provincial capital, Qala-e-Naw, from a position in a nearby hotel.

According to Abdul Latif Rostaee, the local director of public health, 18 were wounded, including six civilians.

It went on to claim the powerful blast struck an American armored personnel carrier, killing two "invaders [references to foreign troops] and injuring three others", though the insurgent claims are often inflated.

The four countries held talks in Beijing from July 11-12 amid US and worldwide efforts to end the almost 18-year war in Afghanistan.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks by three militants and said their fighters had positioned themselves in a building and were firing at the police headquarters.

The U.S. Department of Defense has warned of continued clash between the Afghan and Pakistani forces along the Line of Durand.

American officials have expressed a desire to reach a peace deal by September 1, ahead of Afghan presidential elections scheduled for later that month.

The Taliban, believing they have an upper hand as they seek a USA troop withdrawal, have refused to negotiate with the internationally recognized government or to halt its deadly campaign of attacks.

US military statement announcing the killings of the USA service members was a terse, two-paragraph announcement.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, left, walks from a helicopter with U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass in Kabul, Afghanistan on June 25, 2019.

The violence comes amid intensified US -led efforts to strike a deal with the Taliban to bring an end to the 18-year-old Afghan war.

The United States and Afghanistan have long accused Pakistan of providing "safe havens" for the Taliban on its soil.

Pompeo added that discussions with the Taliban have also begun on USA troop withdrawal.
