Police fatally shoot armed man allegedly attacking immigrant prison in Washington state

The man who was shot and killed by Tacoma police while allegedly staging an attack at a Tacoma immigrant detention center has been identified.

The Tacoma facility, which is run by the Department of Homeland Security, holds migrants pending deportation proceedings.

Officers arrived at the North-west Detention Centre early on Saturday (July 13) after a report the man - armed with a rifle - had set a auto on fire and had attempted to ignite a large propane tank, the city police department said in a statement. The officers say the man wore a satchel and was holding flares, the Seattle Times reported.

Officers reported "shots fired", police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said, at which point the officers had fired; she did not know whether the man also fired.

Police said officers called out to the man, and shots were fired.

A friend of Van Spronsen said that she thinks he wanted to provoke a fatal conflict, the Seattle Times reported. It was not clear how many shots were fired or whether the man fired at police.

Detectives and forensics were processing the scene Saturday morning; the man's name has not been released.
