Alex Acosta RESIGNS Amid Jeffrey Epstein Case Pressure

Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein arrested in NY on sex charges

Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

"It would be selfish for me to stay in this position and continue talking about a case that is 12 years old rather than the unbelievable economy we have right now".

Mr Acosta has served in Mr Trump's Cabinet since April 2017 and from 2005 through 2009 was the USA attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Within the old case in opposition to him, Epstein turned into as soon as accused of abusing dozens of adlescent women between 1999 and 2007.

Prosecutors have also said that Epstein posed a flight risk due to his wealth.

Florida State Sen. Lauren Book, a Democrat, said in a statement that Acosta's resignation was "a victory for crime victims everywhere".

Top Democratic lawmakers and presidential candidates had demanded that Acosta resign.

"And that's one of the things, if you have information, you observed something, you heard something, come and let us know", said Bradley Edwards, an attorney for Epstein's alleged victims.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said he should never have been appointed by Trump and confirmed by the Senate.

Authorities who raided his Upper East Side mansion this week found a trove of pictures of naked underage girls in a safe in the house, prosecutors said. Among their objections were his decisions to proceed with several employment discrimination lawsuits and to allow certain Obama administration holdovers to keep their jobs. Trump named Deputy Labour Secretary Patrick Pizzella as the acting secretary of Labour. He is accused of wiring $350,000 a year ago to two associates.

Financier Jeffrey Epstein paid $350,000 to two doable witnesses in opposition to him in his sex trafficking case, NY federal prosecutors alleged Friday in a expose to make a decision on the 66-year-extinct leisurely bars except trial. He instead pleaded guilty to Florida state charges, spent 13 months in jail, paid settlements to victims and registered as a sex offender.

Epstein, 66, was arrested on July 6 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, where he had returned on his private plane from Paris.

Trump had defended Acosta earlier this week while saying he'd look "very closely" at his handling of the 2008 agreement.

Acosta had attempted to clear his name, and on Wednesday held a news conference - encouraged by Trump - to defend his actions.

He has asked to be allowed to await trial under house arrest, but prosecutors argued in the court filing on Friday that he should be kept behind bars.

"We did what we did because we wanted to see Epstein go to jail", he said, refusing to apologize for his actions.

"We now have 12 years of knowledge and hindsight and we live in a very different world ... today's world treats victims very, very differently", he said. Epstein has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Acosta's office wasn't alone in failing to ensure that Epstein met the full consequences for his crimes.

"I feel power and influence obviously influenced the scales of justice", said Kirk Blouin, town manager of Palm Beach, Fla., who prior to his post served 29 years in the Palm Beach police department.

Acosta has served in Trump's cabinet since April 2017 and from 2005 through 2009 was the USA attorney for the Southern District of Florida. The department also plays a role in combatting human trafficking.

Acosta, the son of Cuban refugees and the first Hispanic member of Trump's Cabinet, previously served on the National Labour Relations Board and in the U.S. Department of Justice under Republican President George W. Bush. Before joining the Trump administration, he was dean of the Florida International University law school.
