Hong Kong protesters clash with police on border with mainland China

Hong Kong government says controversial extradition bill is 'dead'

After a month of protests that saw as many as two million people in the streets at one time, Hong Kong's Special Administrative Region (SAR) government claims it has made a decision to no longer pursue an extradition bill with Mainland China.

Since early June, there has been an enormous show of public opposition against a proposed extradition bill that would allow anyone in Hong Kong, including foreigners, to be sent to Mainland China to face trial under Chinese law.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam this week said the bill was "dead" after having suspended it last month, but opponents are demanding a formal withdrawal.

A huge number of individuals have rampaged of Hong Kong in the previous month in the absolute biggest and most rough showings in decades to challenge a proposed removal charge that would enable individuals to be sent to territory China for preliminary.

On Sunday, tens of thousands marched in one of Kowloon's most popular tourist shopping areas, trying to persuade mainland Chinese tourists to back opposition to the extradition bill.

Amy Chan, a 25-year-old bank employee who joined Saturday's march, called it a continuing action following up on the momentum of the anti-extradition law protests.

He praised Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Hong Kong's chief executive, for her efforts, saying she and her team were persevering in "governance in accordance with the law" and that they were "not avoiding hard tasks".

"Instead, she should really stand out and talk to the young protesters", Leung said. Critics fear suspects may face unfair and politicized trials in mainland China, and that critics of the ruling Communist Party could be targeted.

The city's leader, Carrie Lam, has pledged to listen to the people, but many protesters want her to resign. Sheung Shui is near the border with Shenzhen in mainland China. Organizer Ronald Leung, a leader of the North District Parallel Imports Concern Group, said residents have been complaining about the issue of Chinese traders for many years.
