British police to investigate leak of ambassador's memos

Police tell source of Trump memos leak 'turn yourself in' as Osborne criticises inquiry

Last weekend's disclosure of Darroch's private messages back to London - which included describing the Trump administration as "inept" and "uniquely dysfunctional" - triggered waves of angry tweets from the U.S. president.

"As a result the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command, who take national responsibility for investigating allegations of criminal breaches of the Official Secrets Act, has launched a criminal investigation", Basu added.

British ambassador Kim Darroch quit on Wednesday after USA president Donald Trump called him "stupid" and "wacky" following the publication of the confidential memos by a newspaper.

Asked by The Telegraph how he felt about Sir Kim's resignation the US President said: "Look, I wish the British ambassador well".

"I wish the British ambassador well but they have got to stop their leaking problems there just like they have to stop them in our country".

Met Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said on Friday that there is "clear public interest" in catching the mole.

"They should also be aware of the huge damage that has already been done and the potentially even greater damage to be done by further breaches of the Official Secrets Act".

Mr Basu also warned the media that any further publication of the ambassador's emails could be a criminal offence, and should be returned to the government. You can stop this now.

"If they [the press] are receiving stolen material they should give it back to their rightful owner", he told the Today programme. "Turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences", he said.

Those comments drew a furious response from the president who denounced him as a "very stupid guy" and a "pompous fool" and said the the White House would no longer deal with him.

Mr Johnson refused to confirm Sir Kim would remain United States ambassador during an ITV debate with leadership rival Jeremy Hunt.

"There were lots of factors in his resignation and I would suggest President Trump's response, and the President had actually banned him, made it very hard for him to do his job".

"(Darroch) said that what somebody had relayed to him had certainly been a factor in his resignation", he told BBC television in a testy interview.

He mentioned Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who said in a tweet on Wednesday that Darroch "always understood the strength of President Trump and referred to him as the "Terminator" who is indestructible and will most likely be reelected".
