Angela Merkel opts to sit at ceremony after third bout of shaking

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has suffered three episodes of shaking in public in less than a month

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the visiting Danish prime minister sat through their countries' national anthems at a ceremony in Berlin on Thursday. "You can rest assured that I'm, for one, well aware of the responsibilities of my office and that I will act on questions regarding my health", Merkel said at a joint press conference with Frederiksen.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's body shook visibly at a public event for the third time in less than a month on Wednesday, but the long-time leader insisted that there's nothing to worry about.

"Also as a person, I have a major interest in being healthy and I look after my health", the chancellor said.

A spokeswoman for Merkel, Ulrike Demmer, declined to comment on whether there had been any other shaking episodes beyond the three publicly known ones.

The first time she was seen trembling was during the welcoming ceremony organised for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy who arrived in Berlin with an official visit on June 18.

A second shaking attack took place nine days later when she met the new Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Castle. Merkel, who turns 65 next week, said with a smile that every birthday made her aware that she is getting older.

Her office has given no explanation for the shaking episodes and Merkel has given no details of any medical advice or treatment she has been given.

Mrs Merkel, who has led Germany since November 2005, said previous year that she will not seek a fifth term as chancellor and will not seek any other political job after her current term ends in 2021. She responded that she was very capable and that the ailment would go away one day just as it came.

Officials are monitoring those who may have been in contact with this individual and they are in self-quarantine, Rodriguez says. Travelers with measles bring the disease into US where it can spread in communities with pockets of unvaccinated people.

"Of course Merkel knows that the more serious the reason for her shaking, the more pressure there'd be on her to step down", Oskar Niedermayer, a political scientist at the Free University in Berlin, said after Wednesday's incident. "That is clearly not entirely complete, but there is progress", she said.

"I am fine", she told reporters after her meeting with Rinne.

"This means that people are not becoming younger but maybe more experienced".

Ms Demmer said she had "nothing to add".

Medical experts have played down speculation about the shaking, saying there are multiple potential causes of tremor.

Merkel is renowned for her work ethic and has a reputation for outlasting other leaders at European Union summits with her ability to focus on the details of complex discussions deep into the night.

Because the health of public figures in Germany is regarded as a private matter, the country has very strict laws on the release of their health information.
