Pakistan train collision kills 11, injures 78

The collision took place because the passenger train was diverted onto the incorrect track at the station police said

A rescue operation is underway to help people get out of the wrecked train and recover the victims' bodies, the broadcaster said.

The incident took place in Rahim yar Khan district in Punjab province when a passenger train coming from the eastern city of Lahore rammed into a goods train that had stopped at a crossing, a senior government official said.

A collision between a passenger train and a stationary freight train at a railway station in southern Pakistan killed almost two dozen people and injured more than 70 others, hospital officials said Thursday.

The freight train was on the loop line when the speeding passenger train instead of running on the main line entered the wrong track.

Injured are being shifted to the hospitals of Sadiqabad and Rahim Yar Khan where an emergency has been declared.

Twenty people were killed in the train crash and 74 were wounded, with some in a critical condition.

In another Thursday morning accident, 13 people were killed and several injured when a passenger bus overturned in Attock, Punjab, Geo News reported.

Pakistani Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said in comments to the broadcaster that the collision had been caused by negligence.

The engine and three carriages of the passenger train were completely destroyed in the collision.

Officials say they fear more casualties in the accident.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed his grief over the accident and called for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. "Have asked Railways Minister to take emergency steps to counter decades of neglect of railway infrastructure & ensure safety standards".
