Amazon seeks FCC approval to launch over three thousand broadband satellites

Amazon reveals plan to build global internet with network of 3,236 broadband satellites

The application was filed on 4th July.

The satellite network will offer more reliable access and broadband-speed connectivity to numerous existing 3.8 billion people globally, and 21.3 million Americans that don't now enjoy any access to ground-based broadband, Amazon claims in the new filing.

Amazon made the next move in the race for satellite broadband internet. The application, in which Amazon asked the Commission to give its approval to "launch and operate a non-geostationary satellite orbit system using Ka-band frequencies". It would see the launch of 3,326 low Earth orbit satellites that will bring broadband coverage to the world. The plan was dubbed Project Kuiper and Kuiper Systems, a wholly-owned Amazon subsidiary, has been set up to implement it.

[The] effective implementation of global broadband...services requires more than the design, construction, and deployment of a technologically advanced satellite system, low-priced customer terminals, and gateways. An array of such satellites, in numbers such as those proposed by Amazon will be able to offer continuous, widespread coverage - as when one satellite speeds off out of range there should be one or more to take its place with a stronger signal, and so on.

California quake may have killed man in Nevada
Officers believe the man was working underneath the vehicle when it fell on him during the July 4 natural disaster . This was followed by over 1,000 aftershocks around the epicenter, near the city of Ridgecrest.

The company, however, warns that its satellite system won't cover many regions across the globe, including some parts of Alaska. Amazon is asking the FCC if it will waive the requirement to provide service to the entire United States and all territories - particularly Alaska, which is out of range of the intended satellite cluster orbit paths.

Kuiper's president, Rajeev Badyal, was previously fired from SpaceX after CEO Elon Musk was unhappy with his progress in creating a satellite-broadband program.

The first batch of SpaceX's Starlink satellites were launched in May.

LeoSat Technologies, Telesat and OneWeb are some other companies that are also working on their plans to offer broadband services via Low earth orbit satellites.
