The military- backed authorities say only 61 people have died, including three security forces.

The deposed strongman Omar al-Bashir has been held under arrest in the capital since the military removed him from power in April amid mass public protests against his 30-year rule.

Tibor Nagy said the deadly crackdown "constituted a 180 degree turn in the way events were going with murder, rape, pillaging, by members of the Security Forces".

Waleed Madibo, founder of the think-tank Sudan Policy Forum, said the move against al-Bashir was also aimed at distracting the worldwide community. "And then without any expectation, on June 3rd, the world changed", he said.

The U.S. diplomat spoke late Friday upon his arrival in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa after a two-day visit to Sudan where he met with the ruling generals, protesters and victims of the crackdown, whose accounts were "harrowing and very persuasive".

An alliance of protesters have rejected the state-sponsored investigation and demanded an independent probe.

Addressing supporters at the presidential palace, the deputy head of the military council said on Sunday it was ready to accept nominees for top government positions proposed by the coalition.

Ahmed also said on Saturday that other "symbols of the ousted regime" were under investigation.

On Thursday, TMC spokesperson Lieutenant General Shams al-Din Kabashi expressed "regret" over the crackdown.

Mahmoud said he did not discuss dispersing the protesters in the meeting. "Those who were responsible for the deaths of the protesters at the sit-in must be held accountable, the military council should name those who gave the orders, that's what we should focus on now".

Prosecutors say a large hoard of foreign currency was found in grain sacks at Mr Bashir's home after he was ousted, bringing to an end almost 30 years in power.

Bashir had already been charged with incitement and involvement in the killing of protesters, and prosecutors have also ordered that he be questioned on suspicion of money laundering and terrorism financing. The military toppled him on April 11. The former leader, who came to power in a coup in 1989, is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide relating to abuses by Sudanese forces in the country's Darfur region between 2003 and 2008.
