Over 200 climate protesters arrested in London

The road is blocked by demonstrators during a climate protest at Marble Arch in London Tuesday

A total of 290 people were arrested on Monday and Tuesday after the activists blocked some of the capital's most iconic locations, many camping in tents on London's streets.

Another 24-hour condition was imposed in the Oxford Circus area on Tuesday with the force saying a "number of arrests" had been made in the area that evening, but did not give details of how many or on what grounds. Another activist glued himself to the side of the train.

Demonstrators continue to block sites including Waterloo Bridge over the River Thames and the Oxford Circus and Marble Arch intersections.

Transport for London said there were minor delays on a branch of DLR services "due to a customer incident" at Canary Wharf.

"We're working closely with the police to manage the impact of disruption to London's transport network", a Transport for London representative told The Guardian.

A Transport for London spokesman said it was aware of plans for demonstrations on the Underground and urged people to check for travel updates before setting off.

"Targeting public transport in this way would only damage the cause of all of us who want to tackle climate change, as well as risking Londoners' safety".

Elsewhere on Tuesday, 29 people were arrested after hundreds of activists from the Extinction Rebellion Scotland group occupied Edinburgh's North Bridge, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The group, which is founded by British activists, has three aims: the first is to get governments to declare a "climate emergency", reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2025, and for citizens' assemblies to lead the government on climate and ecological justice.
