Denver schools on lockdown as woman accused of threats against Columbine

A woman is being sought after lockouts at Columbine High and other Colorado schools Sol Pais 18

Authorities are searching for an armed woman in connection with alleged threats that led to lockouts at Columbine High School and almost 20 other Colorado schools, officials said Tuesday.

"Last night Sol Pais traveled here to Colorado and she made threats to commit an act of violence in this area, she is armed and considered unsafe", Mike Taplin of Jefferson County Sheriff's Office told local media.

A "BOLO" sent out by Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force says "NO PC TO ARREST" meaning authorities at the time the BOLO was created did not have enough probable cause to arrest her.

Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said her children attended Miami Beach High School with Pais. They described her as "armed" and "extremely dangerous" and said she was last seen in the county's foothills, clad in camouflage trousers, black boots and a black T-shirt.

She is described as an 18-year-old white female from Florida last seen in the area wearing camouflage pants, a black t-shirt and black boots.

"It's a credible threat ... but she did not make it directly", said Jenny Fulton, a spokeswoman with the sheriff's office.

Columbine and dozens of other Denver-area schools were issued a security threat Tuesday afternoon and a decision will be made early Wednesday as to whether schools will be in session or other security measures taken, officials said in a late-night press conference.

Students were dismissed on time but after school activities were canceled at Columbine.

18-year-old Sol Pais is responsible for a credible threat made against several schools in the Denver area, police say.

The safety unit run by Jefferson County Public Schools is considered to be one of the most sophisticated school security systems in the country.

Officials said after school activities will be held at all schools except Columbine, but didn't explain why. Columbine High School is also located there.

She's being sought amid a "lockout" at more than 20 Colorado schools including Columbine, which in four days will reach the 20th anniversary of the April 1999 massacre in which two gunmen entered the school and killed 12 students and a teacher.

Officials didn't provide further details or reveal where Pais traveled from, saying it would compromise their investigation.

The investigation is being led by the FBI, Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman Mike Taplin said.

The 20th anniversary of the attack is on 20 April. There was no immediate indication whether there was any connection to the anniversary.

In a lockout, exterior doors are locked, and school continues as normal. "We want our schools to be a safe place for kids to learn".
