Scientists Create World's First 3D-Printed Heart Using Patient's Own Cells

Professor Tal Dvir presents a 3D print of heart with human tissue at the University of Tel Aviv

While it remains a far way off, scientists hope one day to be able to produce hearts suitable for transplant into humans as well as patches to regenerate defective hearts.

Then the cells were reprogrammed to become pluripotent stem cells, the extracellular matrix that was processed into a personalized hydrogel that served as the ink for the printer that printed the heart.

On Monday, a team of Tel Aviv University researchers revealed the 3D printed heart that completely matches the immunological, cellular, biochemical and anatomical properties of a human patient.

University of Tel Aviv's Tal Dvir presents his team's 3D-printed heart.

This latest invention represents a major turning point for patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), as heart transplantation is the only definitive treatment for patients in the end-stages of the disease.

The differentiated cells were then mixed with the bio-inks and were used to 3D-print patient-specific, immune-compatible cardiac patches with blood vessels and, subsequently, an entire heart. "Our results demonstrate the potential of our approach for engineering personalized tissue and organ replacement in the future".

He showed a 3D print of a heart with visible vessels; the miniature heart measured less than 3 centimetres in size.

Though it's much smaller than a human heart-at only 2.5 centimeters, it's about the size of a rabbit's-the proof-of-concept still contains a fully vascularized structure, complete with its own cells, ventricles and atria.

Although the organ is only the size of a cherry and can not pump blood, experts said its creating is a "major medical breakthrough". However, the rabbit-sized 3D printed heart, a focal point of the study, contains stem-cell derived cardiac-muscle cells (cardoimyocytes, or CMs) and vessel-lining endolthelial cells (ECs).

Previously, only simple tissues - without the blood vessels they need to live and function - had been printed, according to a press release from the university.

"But larger human hearts require the same technology".

"The biocompatibility of engineered materials is crucial to eliminating the risk of implant rejection, which jeopardizes the success of such treatments", Dvir said. The cells are now able to contract, but do not yet have the ability to pump.

"Maybe, in ten years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world, and these procedures will be conducted routinely". The paper is co-authored by Nadav Noor, Assaf Shapira, Reuven Edri, Idan Gal, Lior Wertheim and Tal Dvir of Tel Aviv University.
