Rep. Ilhan Omar says she has experienced increase in death threats

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar

As President Trump is scolded by Democratic leadership for tweeting an incendiary video that attacks freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for her comments on 9/11, CNN's Jeffrey Toobin pointed out on Monday that it's not a "coincidence" that Trump often targets "people of color".

Trump pinned the 43-second video Friday to the top of his Twitter feed with the caption, "WE WILL NEVER FORGET".

The comments came only days after US President Donald Trump was accused of wanted to harm Omar after he posted a video of an interview on Twitter in which the congresswoman made light of the 9/11 terror attacks.

By abandoning Omar and fuelling the impression that her AIPAC comments two months ago were anti-semitic, mainstream Democrats and the liberal establishment created the foundation in which attacking a sitting congresswoman's "Americanness" would be eventually acceptable.

Rep. Ilhan Omar: "Far too long, we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen".

In her address, Omar had said the CAIR "was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties".

Congressmember Omar's comments were originally taken out of context and circulated by right-wing media, from The Daily Caller to Fox News.

Trump, who will be visiting Omar's Minneapolis congressional district Monday where he'll be attending a nearby tax roundtable event, stood by his criticism of the congresswoman in a Monday morning tweet calling her "out of control, except for her control of Nancy" Pelosi. "It has to stop".

"I am America's hope and the president's nightmare", Ms Omar said, according to a viral Facebook post. They've noted that Omar was among the 213 co-sponsors of a bill to reauthorize the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund and suggested that the vitriol against her is actually rooted in prejudice against her religion.

The liberal journalist began by accusing the president of using Islam "as a way of enflaming tensions and scoring political points", pointing to the president's claim that "Islam hates us" and his call for a Muslim ban during the 2016 election.

Just a week ago, a man in NY was charged with threatening to assault and kill Omar, after he reportedly said "she's a [expletive] terrorist".

"President Trump must take down his disrespectful and risky video", she said, adding that security officials are reviewing Ms Omar's protection and "will continue to monitor and address the threats she faces".

Several prominent Democrats, including presidential candidates Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, condemned Trump's tweet, saying he was inciting racism and violence toward Omar with the video.

Even before the 2018 Midterms, Muslim American lawmaker, Ilhan Omar, has been the target of a vast smear campaign; Whether it's by Republican groups, right-wing journalists, Israel lobbyists, or Saudi trolls.

Prominent Democrats including Beto O'Rourke, Kamala Harris and Omar's fellow first-time Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were quick to rush to Omar's defense, accusing the president and other Republicans of deliberately de-contextualizing her remarks and endangering her life. "The memory of 9/11 is sacred ground, and any discussion of it must be done with reverence", she said. "If she continues to do it, the president will continue to call her out, call her out by name, and he's not going to be ashamed, nor should he be".

Other prominent GOP voices joined Trump in criticizing Omar.
