Global measles cases up by 300 percent in 2019

U.S. sees surge of nearly 20 per cent in confirmed cases of measles, reports

The states that have reported cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington. So far in 2019, there have been 555 measles cases across 20 states.

It is one of the most contagious viruses around, however, nothing about measles has changed. But when an global traveler exposed to measles overseas brings the disease into the country, pockets of unvaccinated communities within the US enable the disease to spread. The CDC report did not say whether there have been any fatalities.

The U.S. outbreak is part of a worldwide rise.

Measles cases worldwide rose by 300% during the first three months of 2019 compared with the same period a year ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said, amid growing concerns over the impact of anti-vaccination campaigns.

A growing and vocal fringe of parents in the United States oppose vaccines believing, contrary to scientific evidence, that ingredients in them can cause autism or other disorders.

States that have reported cases to CDC include NY, where there have been outbreaks in Brooklyn and Rockland County, New Jersey, Connecticut and MA.

"Over recent months, spikes in case numbers have also occurred in countries with high overall vaccination coverage, including the United States of America as well as Israel, Thailand, and Tunisia, as the disease has spread fast among clusters of unvaccinated people", the World Health Organization statement said. It is the worst outbreak seen in the city since 1991, the mayor said.

Of the 329 confirmed NY measles cases, 284 are children and 45 are adults.

The New York City measles outbreak is the largest in the country. There have been 25 hospitalizations and of the six people who have been taken to the intensive care unit, two remained and were in stable condition.

Health officials in Rockland County, New York, tried to bar unvaccinated children from public places, but a judge prohibited the county from enforcing that rule.
