Extinction Rebellion: Environmental protests halt traffic

Demonstrators during a Extinction Rebellion protest in Parliament Square in London

More than 100 Norwich branch members of environmental group Extinction Rebellion's travelled to London today to block five of the cities busiest roads and demand government action on climate change.

Thousands of people blocked four well-known London landmarks on Monday - Waterloo Bridge, Marble Arch, Parliament Square and Oxford Circus - to demand urgent action over the escalating ecological crisis.

A huge climate change demonstration has got underway in London with protesters blocking roads and causing "criminal damage" in a deliberate attempt to get arrested.

At Oxford Circus, protesters unveiled a pink boat that says "TELL THE TRUTH" and on Waterloo Bridge demonstrators brought trees, hanging baskets and skate ramps.

But police said no arrests were made overnight after earlier explaining their operational response to camping "would be dependent on what if any other issues might be ongoing at the time".

"What's fantastic about this is for 30 years you have just had that closing up of public space - "you can't do this, you can't do that, you've got to finish then".

Extinction Rebellion said it aimed to cause more than £6,000 of damage so they could be tried by a jury in Crown Court. "We are here tonight to declare that we do not wish to be at war".

The group tweeted: "Day 1 of #InternationalRebellion saw actions in 33 countries, 52 willing arrests in London occupations of #MarbleArch #OxfordCircus #ParliamentSquare #WaterlooBridge #PicadillyCircus, overnight some occupations evicted". They plan to engage in acts of non-violent civil disobedience against governments in capital cities around the world. A police officer on the bridge said the Met could impose limits on assembly if they felt there was a serious risk of disruption or to public order.

Extinction Rebellion said: "The worldwide rebellion begins and Extinction Rebellion will be bringing London to a standstill for up to two weeks".
