Egypt's Sisi meets Libyan general Khalifa Haftar in Cairo

He was referring to eastern officials allied to the Tripoli government.

Haftar, who was exiled in the United States for two decades, returned to Libya in 2011 when the revolution erupted, commanding forces that eventually toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Haftar backs a rival administration based in eastern Libya that refuses to recognise the UN-backed unity government led by Fayez al-Sarraj.

A statement from Sisi's office following the pair's meeting did not mention Haftar's offensive directly but "confirmed Egypt's support for efforts to combat terrorism and extremist groups and militias in order to achieve security and stability for the Libyan citizen".

Images released by the palace showed a seated Mr Sisi flanked by Gen Haftar and the head of Egypt's intelligence Abbas Kamel in the reception hall of the presidential palace in the Cairo suburb of Heliopolis.

Egypt has in the past blamed Libyan-based militants for a series of cross-border attacks against its security forces and minority Christians traveling to remote desert monasteries. The United Nations has warned the situation could spiral out of control. Islamist militants have since controlled large parts of the vast country, including the capital Tripoli.

Both sides have been accused of targeting civilians, the Daily Sabah reported.

Since a Libyan military commander launched an assault to take over Tripoli, the capital, 10 days ago, 121 people have died and 561were wounded, the World Health Organization said Sunday.

The WHO said in a tweet that 561 others had been wounded since commander Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive earlier this month to take Tripoli, which is now controlled by a UN-backed government.

WHO's Libya Twitter account posted an update of "casualties" and said it was "sending medical supplies, health staff support for first- and second-line responders".

"Three medical personnel have been killed and five ambulances have been incapacitated by shrapnel", OCHA said in a Saturday statement.

United Nations envoy Ghassan Salame said a school was bombed in the town of Ain Zara, around 15 kilometres southeast of Tripoli, without saying who was responsible.

"The humanitarian community repeats its warning that continuing to attack medical and civilian facilities is a violation of worldwide humanitarian law and human rights law", OCHA said in a statement.
