Ecuador's president says Assange tried to use its embassy to spy

Police bundle Wiki Leaks founder Julian Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy into a police van in London after he was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police and taken into custody Thursday

Assange was seized by plain clothes police officers on April 11 during dramatic scenes that saw him expelled from the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Confined to a tiny bedroom - a converted ladies lavatory - at the cramped 3 Hans Crescent building in Knightsbridge, he spent nearly 2500 days there before being dragged out by British police last week when the South American nation revoked his political asylum.

What WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange did to entertain himself during his seven-year stay inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London has always been the source of speculation.

Also Sunday, WikiLeaks said Australian Consul Clare West would visit the Ecuadoran embassy on Monday to request that the mission hand over Assange's belongings.

Julian Assange, dressed in a vest and shorts, skateboards around his bedroom in the Ecuadorian embassy.

Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno has defended his decision to remove Assange's asylum status last week claiming he 'repeatedly violated his asylum conditions.' The president made references to Assange's apparently poor hygiene, following allegations made by Ecuador's interior minister Maria Paula Romo.

"Any attempt to destabilize is a reprehensible act for Ecuador, because we are a sovereign nation and respectful of the politics of each country", Moreno told The Guardian.

"We can not allow our house, the house that opened its doors, to become a centre for spying", the Guardian quoted Moreno as saying. Sweden is considering reviving the investigation.

Should Stockholm make a request to extradite Assange, the UK government will have to consider whether this should be done before or after that of the United States, where the 47-year-old is fighting a USA extradition warrant relating to the release by WikiLeaks of a huge cache of official documents.

He faces up to 12 months in jail in the United Kingdom over breaking bail conditions., and possible extradition to the U.S. over WikiLeaks' release of sensitive USA military documents.

"Ecuador has made these allegations to justify the unlawful and extraordinary act of letting police come inside an embassy", Robinson told the UK's Sky News.

Ecuadorian president Lenín Moreno had previously chastised Assange for skateboarding indoors, urging him to change some of his behaviour inside the embassy, including spending more time cleaning up after his pet cat. More than 70 British legislators have urged Javid to give priority to a case involving rape allegations ahead of the U.S. request.

He would not be expected to enter a plea to the Department of Justice case unless he loses his extradition case and is brought to a courtroom in the United States.

Assange, who sought refuge within the embassy in August, 2012, was dramatically arrested last Thursday.

His next court appearance is May 2 via video link.
