Burger King pulls chopsticks ad after social media backlash

Burger King is facing heat over an advertisement out of New Zealand that shows diners attempting to chow down on burgers using oversized chopsticks.

The ad in question featured people trying to eat the Vietnamese Sweet Chilli burger with a pair of giant chopsticks.

People quickly started tagging the Burger King creative team and demanding they address the racially insensitive ad.

In 2017, Dove released a body wash ad that showed a black woman removing her brown shirt, only to reveal a white woman in a light shirt underneath.

Of course, not everyone was offended by it, and many Twitter users found the whole ordeal confusing.

In China, the Burger King advert has been viewed more than eight million times on the news website Pear Video and tens of thousands of Weibo users have been posting about it.

"I can see why it is causing quite an outcry on social media", she said.

Christchurch all-inclusive rugby team slams Israel Folau for latest anti-gay post
Rugby Australia has labelled superstar Israel Folau's Instagram post that said "hell awaits" for homosexuals as "unacceptable". In April 2018, Folau said gay people deserved to go to "HELL. unless they repent of their sins and turn to God ".

New Zealander Mariah Mo flagged the ad last week and reposted it on Twitter, saying: "Chopsticks are hilarious right".

In her tweets, Ms Mo wrote of the importance of fighting the different manifestations of racism, from "the kind that makes fun of different cultures, to the kind that shoots and murders those peacefully praying in their place of worship".

She later sarcastically added, "This is how Asians eeeeeeeat". It has generated angry responses from netizens who were equally upset over the ad's blatant mocking of the use of chopsticks. But particularly since the rise of social media, that message has become hard to control and reel in at all times.

Some on social media have likened this to the racism row faced by fashion house Dolce & Gabbana after they posted videos of a Chinese model eating Italian food with chopsticks in 2018.

In a statement to CNN on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the burger chain apologized for the ad and said the franchise in New Zealand was asked to remove it immediately.

Burger King's general manager of marketing, James Woodbridge, told the Herald the company is "truly sorry" and the ad has been removed.
