Chris Sale Agrees To Five-Year, $145M Extension With Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox and left handed ace Chris Sale are in agreement on a five-year contract extension that is expected to be in the $150 million range according to a report by Jeff Passan of ESPN. Details aren't finalized yet, but the deal will likely keep him in Boston well into his 30s.

Since he was acquired from the White Sox in December 2016, Sale is 29-12 with a 2.56 ERA, holding opponents to a.196 batting average and averaging 13.17 strikeouts per nine innings.

By these measures Sale's deal with the Red Sox makes sense.

Though Sale has been among the very best pitchers in baseball for each one of the past seven seasons, a contract extension is not without its risks.

Sale is getting ready for his third season in Boston. Sale has been an American League All-Star in each of the last seven seasons. He returned in time for Boston's run to the World Series, striking out Manny Machado for the final out in October.

State of emergency declared in NT as Cyclone Trevor looms
Trevor lashed the Aurukun community overnight and some 180 homes remain without power on Thursday as residents began cleaning up. Mr Smith has not ruled out the storm strengthening to a category five with winds of more than 300km/h.

Sale did, however, dominate when pitching out of the bullpen in October. In five playoff appearances, his ERA rose to 4.17 and he only lasted into the sixth inning once.

Shoulder trouble limited to Sale to 17 innings the final two months of last season, and he didn't look much like himself in the postseason.

Chris Sale is foregoing free agency to sign a long-term deal with the Red Sox. They're also facing several more tough decisions in the next few years.

The news comes during the same week that Sale's teammate, Mookie Betts, made it clear he'd be surprised if he doesn't become a free agent when his contract is up following the 2020 season.
