Chinese premier to visit Europe in April

Premier: China needs 'strong measures' to support economy

But President Xi Jinping did not rule out the use of force during a January speech on cross-strait relations.

China would not let the world's second-largest economy "slip out of a reasonable range", Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (李克強) said yesterday, as he pledged support in the face of "new downward pressure".

Li has also said the government would develop innovative mechanisms to better match people's supply and market demand.

Even if we accelerate building elderly nursing homes and multi-functional kindergartens, the supply shortage may not be completely eased due to the rapid population ageing in China, he said. Earlier this month, a hike in tariffs was put on hold because of promising progress, but USA officials have recently noted that "major issues" remain.

China's new foreign investment law, which was first tabled for reading last December, states in broad terms that foreign firms will receive the same treatment as local ones when it comes to government procurement, and that the authorities will not force technology transfer in exchange for access to China's markets.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is not mincing words when he tries to convince the world that Beijing will not use Chinese companies to spy on other countries.

Earlier this month, Huawei, a leader in the field of next-generation 5G mobile communications, said it has filed a lawsuit against the USA government with a federal district court in Texas.

Her father is the company's founder, Ren Zhengfei, a former engineer in the People's Liberation Army.

Premier Li Keqiang's comment at a news conference was the communist government's highest-level rejection of accusations Chinese companies might spy on foreign customers. He said China is ready to cut cooperate taxes and ease monetary policy further.

Li said the negotiations for a China-EU investment treaty are being advanced to make two-way investment flows more open and benefit the two sides on an equal footing.

China now has 250 million people above 60 years and 170 million above 65 years, Li said during his annual press conference here.

Li said that while frictions exist and will continue between Washington and Beijing, shared interests between the two countries far outweigh their differences.

But during Li's news conference in Beijing, Russia's Tass news agency and the Associated Press reported that a senior North Korean official said at a press conference that Pyongyang is considering suspending denuclearization talks with the United States.
