Number of Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS drops to 1.9m

President Muhammad Buhari presenting the survey stated that although HIV prevalence has reduced to 1.4 per cent, Nigeria can not still celebrate because now about a million of Nigerians with the virus is now not on treatment.

The report is contained in the Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey which was organised by the Federal government and funded by the United States Government and other relevant stakeholders.

The size estimate of the key population identified Kaduna state with the highest number of female sex workers and people who inject drugs active hotspots with Kano State identified as the state with the highest numbers of men who have sex with men active hotspots.

"This is a transformative moment for the country, because the survey is the largest survey we have managed to have in the history of the response to HIV".

"The Nigeria National HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) findings provide Nigeria with an accurate national HIV prevalence measure of 1.4%".

The South-south geopolitical zone has the highest HIV prevalence among adults age 15 to 64 years in the country with 3.1 percent, while the Northwest had the lowest prevalence rate with 0.6 percent.

Dr. Sidibe referred to the results of a recently conducted survey on HIV launched by President Buhari which has indicated positive outcomes for HIV in Nigeria, especially with fewer infections and fewer people living with the disease.

"For the first time, the end of AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 is truly in sight for our country", said H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria.
