President Donald Trump planning visit to Ireland

DUP leader Arlene Foster chats to US President Donald Trump while Taoiseach Leo Varadkar talks with Speaker Nancy Pelosi at a lunch hosted by her yesterday

DONALD TRUMP has said he is surprised at the way Brexit has been handled - and blamed Theresa May for ignoring his advice.

On the prospect of another referendum, Mr Trump said: "I don't think another vote would be possible because it would be very unfair to the people that won".

President Donald Trump meets with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in the Oval Office of the White House, Thursday, March 14, 2019, in Washington.

"I lived in a country where if I'd tried to be myself at the time, it would have ended up breaking laws", he said, The Advocate reports. "But I think it could have been negotiated in a different manner". Mr Trump said he had seen Mr O'Rourke's announcement and said: "I've never seen so much hand movement". Lawmakers have committed the country to staying in the bloc unless a divorce deal is ratified.

But the tensions over Brexit served this year to highlight a divide between the two countries with Ireland embracing the E.U.as Trump questions why European nations continue to marry their economies together instead of going it alone on issues like trade. "The potential is unlimited!" "Maybe I shouldn't let you do it, I'll just get you in trouble".

Mrs Foster has said she hopes to invite Mr Trump to attend the Open Championship at Portrush this July.

"I will be coming at some point this year".

MPs are set to vote on Thursday evening on whether to request a delay until at least June.
