New Zealand shooting: Australian senator egged after controversial remarks

In video footage much of the egg can be seen bursting upon contact with Australian senator Fraser Anning's head. He then turns and hits the youth's face in retaliation

The attention seeking Fraser Anning, who is a far-right independent senator was being interviewed over his comments when a teenage boy appeared to crack an egg on the back of his head.

So now the teen, punch to the face and all, has quickly become the latest internet folk hero.

Queensland Senator Fraser Anning was filmed striking the 17-year-old after being egged during a meeting at Moorabbin, Melbourne.

Several of Anning's supporters intervened tackled the boy to the ground while the Senator slipped out a side door.

A rabidly anti-Muslim politician in Australia is facing widespread denunciation after immediately blaming a Friday mass shooting in New Zealand - which killed more than 40 people at two local mosques - on the Muslim faith and Muslim immigration.

His comments sparked outrage across the country, and an online petition calling for his removal from parliament gained over 265 000 signatures within 24 hours.

In a media statement issued, Senator Anning said the attacks highlighted the "growing fear over an increasing Muslim presence" in Australian and New Zealand communities.

The Queensland senator drew global condemnation for his efforts to blame the attack that killed 49 Muslim worshippers on immigration. The 28-year-old Australian, identified as Brenton Harrison Tarrant, killed 49 people and injured 48 others after he opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday.

Reports indicate that the boy has been released by police without charge. "Let us be clear, while Muslims may have been the victims today, usually they are the perpetrators".

Following the backlash, Australian Senator Fraser Anning deleted many aggressive and discriminatory tweets from his personal account.
