Ahead of world kidney day on Thursday, city doctors suggest youngsters take up one week long "NoSugarNoSalt" challenge to increase awareness among people regarding the monitoring of salt in their diet for a healthier kidney.

This year World Kidney Day is themed as "Kidney health for everyone, everywhere", dedicated to spreading awareness about one of the most vital organs in the body. In case the disease gets worse, waste starts building up in blood, making problems like high blood pressure, weak bones, a low red blood cell count (anaemia), poor nutrition and nerve damage more likely. Dr Sarfraz Sarwar, Dr Munawar Khaliq, Diabetologist Dr Sobia Naheed, Dr Fouzia Mushtaq, dietician Naila Rasheed and others spoke in the public awareness programmes.

"It's an opportunity for everyone who can not afford to come to the hospital for checks", she said.

He demanded that governments increase the allocation of budgets for education and health sectors and duly spend all the money to bring visible and effective changes in these two sectors.

It is important to keep one's weight in check and also take care of the salt intake.

"We are grateful to the Ministry of Health which is in the process of articulating a comprehensive policy for non-communicable diseases and we are looking forward to the kidney disease being a prominent part of this policy".
