'At least 100 missing' in Zimbabwe after cyclone

Vehicles get caught in the rain as tropical cyclone Idai begins to come from central Mozambique to the flooded district of Chikwawa southern Malawi

Bore, who is also the Acting Head of the Civil Protection Department in Manicaland Province, said although more information is trickling in, over 125 houses in Ngangu have collapsed with forty people reportedly missing, while 30 are also missing in Rusitu.

People fled from their homes to the slopes of mountain and were waiting to be rescued, but strong winds have hampered helicopter flights.

Senior forecaster Jan Vermeulen said: "Cyclone Idai made landfall at about midnight and is now lying north-west off Beira".

Tropical cyclone Idai battered central Mozambique on Friday killing at least 21 people and cutting off more than half a million people in the port city of Beira.

Luis Fonseca, a journalist at Lusa News Agency told Al Jazeera that the cyclone is expected to dissipate on Saturday in Mozambique, but it will continue to create trouble.

"Now they risk losing their harvest and food insecurity is the next big risk in all over this area", Fonseca explains.

Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change spokesman Jacob Mafume tweeted that a "serious humanitarian crisis (is) unfolding" in eastern Zimbabwe districts. Thousands were marooned by the heavy flooding and, only caring for the lives, abandoned their possessions to seek safety on higher ground.

Malawi has also been affected by the natural disaster, where 56 lives were claimed by aggressively heavy rains earlier this week.

Zimbabwe is still assessing its losses.

Joshua Sacco, a member of Parliament in the eastern district of Chimanimani, told Reuters that the storm had left a trail of destruction reminiscent of Cyclone Eline in February 2000, which devastated southern Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe's ministry of information has been posting updates on social media and has announced that the country's national army was leading rescue efforts in the affected areas.

At least 126 people were killed by the downpour that has struck parts of Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa over the past week, officials said.

When the cyclone hit Mozambique, authorities there were forced to close the global airport in the port city of Beira after the air traffic control tower, the navigation systems and the runways were damaged by the storm. "Houses and trees were destroyed and pylons downed", an official at the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) told AFP. The airport was shut down after suffering damage to its control tower and runways.

"The runway is full of obstacles and parked aircrafts are damaged".
