Ever since Thunberg began her protest in August 2018, students in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Ireland, Poland, Thailand, Colombia, and Uganda have staged similar school walkout protests to pressure government officials to look into climate change.

She was nominated by three Norwegian MPs.

If she were to win, she would be the youngest recipient since Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai, who was 17 when she received the prize.

"We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees", Norwegian Socialist Left MP Freddy Andre Ovstegard told AFP. "Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement which I see as a major contribution to peace".

What are the school protests?

The rallies will continue around the world, with students in more than 100 countries and in 2,000 locations set to skip class to make their voices heard.

According to the testament of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish magnate who instituted the awards, university professors in Law, History and Political Sciences, parliamentarians, former laureates and members of worldwide courts are among people who can nominate someone for the Peace Prize.

Past job expansions at the facility have generated about 10,000 applications, Fernandes said. Officials from the company say literacy is a fundamental part of career preparedness.

But Friday's protest is billed as the biggest so far.

Malala Yousafzai now holds the record for youngest Nobel laureate after she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 at the age of 17.

Last year, Thunberg stopped going to school every Friday and instead protested in front of the Swedish Parliament to demand more effective measures against climate change.

Since then, she has been missing lessons most Fridays to stage her regular protests.

The Nobel prizes are awarded each year on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of the death of its founder Alfred Nobel, in a double ceremony: at the Oslo City Hall in Norway, for the Peace Prize, and in the Konserthus in Stockholm, Sweden, for the other five awards. Any person who meets the nomination criteria is considered.

There are 301 candidates (223 individuals, and 78 organizations) for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, according to the Nobel Foundation.

The list of nominees is kept secret for at least 50 years, in line with the Nobel Foundation's statutes.
