Post-Brexit Britain Ready to Use ‘Hard Power’

British Defense Minister Gavin Williamson confirmed in a speech Monday morning that the Royal Navy's HMS Queen Elizabeth will sail into waters that are the subject of dispute between China and other nations.

The politician made the remarks as London prepares to send its largest warship, the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, to the South China Sea on a mission to enforce freedom of navigation rights.

"A post-Brexit global Britain must be about taking action alongside our friends and allies and action to oppose those who flout worldwide law".

Williamson will also highlight US-UK military relations while echoing Trump's call for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries to increase their spending, citing a need to better handle what Williamson calls Russian provocations.

The defence secretary said the government is invoking a "Global Britain" mantra which must involve "action to oppose those who flout worldwide law".

"The price of non-intervention in global crises has often been unacceptably high", he said.

"Since the new global great game will be played on a global playing field, we must be prepared compete for our interests and our values far, far from home", Williamson said.

Toronto police identify woman who allegedly threw chair off balcony
Constable David Hopkinson says they're investigating the incident as a case of mischief endangering life. At this point there is no time frame for the woman to get representation and present herself to police.

"To talk but fail to act risks our nation being seen as little more than a paper tiger", he added.

"We can build new alliances, rekindle old ones and most importantly make it clear that we are the country that will act when required".

Defending interventionist policy, he said the cost of failing to act in global crises had often been "unacceptably high", and that Western powers can not "walk on by when others are in need".

According to Williamson, the United Kingdom also plans to invest £1.9 billion (roughly $2.45 billion) in the country's cyber-defenses.

Williamson detailed plans to modernise the armed forces, and said it must increase its "mass and lethality".

"Against adversaries upping their spending and advancing technology, we have to respond", Williamson added.
