Senator Amy Klobuchar joins crowded presidential race

For every worker, farmer, dreamer and builder. We are all exhausted of the shutdowns and the putdowns, the gridlock and the grandstanding. That's community. That's a shared story. Amy Klobuchar's announcement that she's running for president.

"But that sense of community is fracturing across our nation right now, worn down by the petty and vicious nature of our politics". She has many staff who have been with her for years - including her Chief of Staff and her State Director, who have worked for her for 5 and 7 years respectively, as well as her political advisor Justin Buoen, who has worked for her for 14 years - and many who have gone on to do unbelievable things, from working in the Obama Administration (over 20 of them) to running for office to even serving as the Agriculture Commissioner for Minnesota. "She listens", Smith said. "I have neighbors. I have all of you who are willing to come out in the middle of the winter, all of you who took the time to watch us today, all of you who are willing to stand up and say people matter". Klobuchar had worked with then Sen. Some Republicans say Klobuchar is able to get things done because she pushes smaller issues. She supported the Green New Deal, a Democratic plan proposed this past week to combat climate change and create thousands of jobs in renewable energy.

She has said that success could translate to other Midwestern states such as MI and Wisconsin, reliably Democratic in presidential races for decades until Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton.

However, her legislative record has drawn criticism from both the GOP and some fellow Democrats.

Klobuchar, now serving her third term in the Senate, has hinted for weeks that she would be entering the race, officially doing so after an onslaught of reports that her "Minnesota nice" public image does not align with how she treats staff members behind closed doors.

It is this approach that has given her a reputation for being "Minnesota nice" - but it also, in her early years, reportedly earned her the unflattering nickname "Cotton Candy Amy" in some circles. "We need someone who is focused on getting things done for this country".

A member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Klobuchar was most recently in the public eye during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and she helped lead Democratic opposition to him and Trump's other high-court pick, Neil Gorsuch.

Klobuchar became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Minnesota in 2016 and won 43 Minnesota counties that Trump had won two years earlier and 51 of 87 counties overall when she won reelection in 2018. He asked Klobuchar, "Have you?"

"When you have a parent who's an alcoholic, you're pretty careful about drinking", she said. "I was truly trying to get to the bottom of the facts and the evidence".

She also sought to highlight her Midwestern sensibilities to set herself apart from some of the other prominent Democratic candidates. Sherrod Brown of OH, who has been visiting early voting states, and Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who established an exploratory committee last month.

Klobuchar campaigned with Democrats in Iowa previous year, and in December spoke to progressive farmers and activists about the importance of bridging the divide between urban and rural areas.

Klobuchar won her most recent Senate race in November with more than 60 percent of the vote. "That's the challenge Amy Klobuchar faces especially with Democratic activists in the primary", said Mary Anne Marsh, a Democratic strategist based in Boston.
