Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande win early Grammy awards

It looks like the Grammy Awards will be embroiled in drama, yet again. This marks yet another rough year for the Grammys. This week Ariana Grande blasted Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich and accused him of lying about why she was no longer performing at the show. Grande was quick to refute this account on Twitter, her chosen medium for handling such matters.

"I gotta thank God, thank you for looking out for me. I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more", she continued. She ended the tweet with her trademark black heart emoji.

Carlile told the AP she stands "behind Ariana Grande's decision to stand up for herself and her art".

"Representation is everything", Carlile told AFP at a pre-Grammy gala honoring country legend Dolly Parton.

Her six nominations are for Record of the Year ("The Joke"), Album of the Year (By the Way, I Forgive You), Song of the Year ("The Joke"), Best American Roots Performance ("The Joke"), Best American Roots Song ("The Joke") and Best Americana Album (By the Way, I Forgive You). Other big stars also declined to attend, including Kendrick Lamar, the top nominee with eight, and Drake, nominated for seven awards. In 1989, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff boycotted the show after they learned that the presentation of the best rap performance award wouldn't be televised, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Grammy Premiere Ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. PT, with host Shaggy leading the festivities, and presenters like Questlove handing out the first Grammy Awards. Some prominent figures whom the Grammys have "alienated", per The Times, include Drake, Frank Ocean, Kanye West and Jay-Z, who called out the 2018 Grammys specifically on a track from Everything Is Love, his joint album with wife Beyonce. She's also nominated for Album of the Year.

Ehrlich, in The Times interview, acknowledged that the Grammys "continue to have a problem in the hip-hop world". A representative for the Grammys didn't return an email seeking clarification about the tribute.

Childish Gambino won the coveted prize for best music video for his politically provocative "This Is America".

"If there´s a little girl waiting up late to see me sing on the Grammys, then I´m happy I´m here".

Women artists scored nominations in all of the top categories, after being largely muted a year ago: Gaga, Carlile, rapper Cardi B and pop futurist Janelle Monae are among the frontrunners.

The brazen comment drew outrage and prompted the executive, Neil Portnow, to say he would resign when his contract expires this summer.

To help combat the Grammys' much-discussed diversity problem, the Recording Academy expanded the major categories to eight nominees each - so now that the field is wider than ever, expect some upsets. Fifteen-time Grammy victor Alicia Keys will be the first woman to host the ceremony in over a decade. See all of the stunning celebrity arrivals on the 2019 Grammys red carpet!
