Former Trump Lawyer Cohen to Testify Publicly Before Congress

President Donald Trump's former personal attorney exits the United States Courthouse after sentencing at the in New York

Cummings said the committee was "in the process of consulting with Special Counsel [Robert] Mueller's office" to ensure that Cohen's scheduled testimony would not interfere with the ongoing investigation into interactions between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

The hearing, set for February 7 before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, was announced Thursday afternoon by Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, who is the new chairman of the committee.

Before he begins his three year sentence in federal prison for his role in buying the silence of women who alleged affairs with the future president during the 2016 presidential election, Michael Cohen will testify publicly before Congress.

"I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired", he added.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and sought to minimize Cohen's statements by painting him as a liar. Most relevant are the details concerning the hush payments to two women who claim to have had sexual affairs with Trump and information on the Trump campaign's dealings with Russian Federation.

At the time of Cohen's sentencing, federal authorities announced a deal not to prosecute American Media Inc.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Representative Adam Schiff said in a statement on Thursday that he welcomed Cohen's upcoming public testimony, but he added that Cohen would need to speak to lawmakers in a private setting as well.

President Donald Trump speaks to the media after signing Anti-Human Trafficking Legislation in the Oval Office on January 9, 2019 in Washington.

Asked by reporters in Texas on Thursday about Cohen's appearance, Trump said he's "not anxious about it at all". Prosecutors have said Cohen did so at Trump's direction.

The president, "knows the truth", Cohen said.

The women have claimed they had affairs with Trump after the real estate mogul married his third wife, Melania.

"Recently, the president tweeted a statement calling me 'weak, ' and he was correct, but for a much different reason than he was implying", Cohen said at the time.

Cohen will appear before the House Oversight and Reform Committee, a government release explained Thursday.

As Trump's longtime lawyer and "fixer", Cohen had connections to a number of the key questions surrounding the president, the Mueller probe and now the Democratic congressional investigations.

He promised to continue to cooperate with the special counsel's investigation of Trump's campaign.

Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of NY have implicated, but not charged, the president in the deals reached in the closing weeks of the 2016 election, alleging in court filings that Cohen acted "in coordination with and at the direction of" Trump.

Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Cohen "Cohen has had in his possession for months a request to return to the Senate Intelligence Committee for additional closed-door testimony, made all the more necessary by Mr. Cohen's indictment and guilty plea for making false statements to Committee investigators".
