Toyota recalls 1.3 million vehicles in the US

The ACCC earlier this year added some 1.1 million vehicles to the compulsory recall.

There are fears that when this happens shrapnel could be hurled across the vehicle causing significant harm or damage to passengers. Japanese manufacturer Takata's front passenger air bag inflators killed at least 23 people worldwide and injured hundreds more.

Also covered are Lexus models including the 2010 through 2012 ES 350, the 2010 through 2017 GX 460, the 2010 through 2015 IS 250C and 350C, the 2010 through 2013 IS 250 and 350 and the 2010 through 2014 IS-F.

Scion XB compacts from the 2010 to 2015 model years are also involved.

Toyota announced it will replace the inflators or entire air bags on 1.7 vehicles in North America, 1.3 million of which are in the U.S, reported Fortune.

Vehicle owners who are affected by the recall will be notified via mail in January.

In February 2018, the recall of vehicles affected by the faulty Takata airbags was made compulsory under law, with affected manufacturers required to replace all defective airbags by the end of 2020.

Last week, United States automaker Ford recalled 953,000 vehicles to address Takata airbag problems.

Safety advocates say the completion rate should be far higher given the danger associated with the inflators. Both automakers have urged some drivers of older vehicles not to drive them until the inflators are replaced.

Owners can check to see if their vehicles have been recalled by going to or and keying license plate or vehicle identification numbers.
