No, Samsung isn’t pre-installing Facebook on your phone

A Samsung Electronics Co. Galaxy S8

Some Samsung smartphone users were in for a shock when they discovered that they were unable to delete the Facebook app from their devices, according to a report by Bloomberg. People either install the app willingly to their phones and in a lot of cases, you will find the app already pre-installed for you. It is a problem with nearly all phone companies, as they pre-install third-party apps that can not be removed by users.

At present, neither Samsung nor Facebook responded to the issue faced by Samsung users.

"Can they still track your information, your location, or whatever else they do? We the consumer should have a say in what we want and don't want on our products".

Facebook has signed agreements (the total number of which is still unknown) with smartphone manufacturers to not only pre-install its app but to prevent users from deleting it.

Users can't delete these (except by hacking into their devices), and they can instead only be disabled and hidden.

Gone are the days when Samsung phones would ship with plenty of bloatware. The version of Facebook (i.e. stub) that comes with Samsung phones won't be capable to do anything useful until it's been updated to the real Facebook apps. Apparently the deals they make with manufacturers are meant to give consumers "the best phone experience right after opening the box" and you can understand such decisions cannot sit well with people.

Facebook added: "We do this in a transparent manner by explaining the practice through our Data Policy and Cookies Policy, and by using Google's advertising identifier, which can be controlled centrally by people using their device settings".

Similarly, Twitter can be preinstalled on some phones, but the company said it wouldn't collect any data about users unless they log into their Twitter accounts.

Many parents, this one included, have decided that their children should not use any form of social media, including IM apps such as Whatsapp, due to the threat they pose to their mental health.

@SamsungMobileUS Why am I not able to delete the Facebook app from my S7 Edge? Other phone makers and service providers, including LG Electronics Inc., Sony Corp., Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc., have made similar deals with app makers. "Very slimy", Twitter user Gopinath Pandalai in Bangalore, who goes by @gopibella, wrote on the site in October. I recently did a factory reset of my old Samsung Galaxy S7 in order to bequeath it to my son. "Time to move on". If there's an event coming up on Facebook, he never marks that he's going or interested, even if he is, because he dislikes that his attendance will advertise the event to his other friends.
