Google Ends Play Service Support For Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Those older versions keep continuing to lose their place when it comes to the distribution chart, and it seems that Ice Cream Sandwich has found its turn.

But now, seven years on, Android has moved on beyond recognition again and Ice Cream Sandwich has started to look like a child's coding project. That seemingly means the apps were fine initially and were later updated with malicious code.

GOOGLE HAS put Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out to pasture as it raises the requirements for the Google Play API.

In a blog post Google says one workaround is for developers to build multiple APKs for their apps including an APK that targets API levels lower than 16 and another that targets the newer APIs.

Google on the Android Developer Blog has posted that active device count for the Android Ice Cream Sandwich has been below 1 per cent for some time which is why the company has made a decision to end support for the Android ICS for future Google Play Services. This actually means that the Play Store won't update Play Service anymore, beyond the 14.7.99 version. Most likely, the majority of these devices aren't even in use as daily smartphones.

It is going to improve the Android Auto features, which is going to expand and upgrade the compatibility for Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 devices, as well as making overall improvements to Pixel 3 audio performance for some vehicles. If you have applications that support levels 14 or 15, you can still build and publish your app to devices running ICS, but you will get a build error when updating to newer SDK version, according to the post. The largest number of users are now on version of Nougat i.e. API level 25 or 25.

In theory, developers can maintain and roll out updates for a version of their apps specifically for Ice Cream Sandwich users, but it's highly unlikely that a lot of them would do it. Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the first device which came with Android Ice Cream Sandwich out-of-the-box. The platform also marked the birth of a new type of font called Roboto which was designed mainly for the high-res displays.
