New Jeep Wrangler does terribly in European crash tests

Fiat Panda 2018 lands zero stars Euro NCAP safety rating - Second worst rating of all time

Euro NCAP stated its displeasure on the Wrangler by saying that it was "truly disappointing" to see a new vehicle in 2018 with no autonomous braking and lane assistance. "It is high time we saw a product from the Fiat-Chrysler group offering safety to rival its competitors", said Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general, Euro NCAP. "The Fiat Panda complies with all safety legislation in every country in which it is sold". "Testing protocols that apply exclusively to urban scenarios may not align with such a vehicle".

"The Wrangler is a specialist vehicle that offers unique features that are highly valued by our customers, both in Australia and overseas".

Europe's equivalent of the United States' Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2018 Jeep Wrangler a dangerously low one-star safety rating on Wednesday.

Independent testers rated adult occupant protection at 89 percent, confirming that they are well protected in an accident.

Even the models scoring five stars were not ideal as for instance the Hyundai Santa Fe had an issue with side curtain airbags and could not be torn while the BMW X5 failed to deploy knee airbag correctly.

The new Wrangler, meanwhile, comes with a seatbelt reminder and a "simple driver-set speed limiter, but no other form of driver-assistance system".

The Euro NCAP testing procedure has changed dramatically over the past few years, with a major overhaul being introduced at the beginning of 2018, one that made the current testing procedure the toughest one in the history of the organization. "There were a number of issues with the Wrangler in impact testing too, in terms of deformation of the footwell and damage to connecting structures, while the make-up of the dashboard was seen to present a risk to occupants".

The BMW X5 also suffered from airbag problems, the driver knee airbag not deploying correctly in the frontal offset test and providing little additional protection to the driver's legs.

The Wrangler performed better in whiplash and lateral impact tests, earning a good rating.

The Panda also scored zero points in the frontal and lateral impact tests for 6- and 10-year old children, with weak chest protection for older kids in the frontal impact test and poor head and neck protection across the board.

The Gladiator was revealed at the recent Los Angeles motor show ahead of its launch in North America next year and in Australia in early 2020.

It is only the second auto ever to handed a zero-star Euro NCAP rating, with the other vehicle being the Fiat Punto 2017.
