Huawei CFO facing USA extradition appears in Canadian court

Huawei's chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou

The company would not say why she faces extradition, but at Meng's bail hearing Friday, the Crown revealed she is wanted due to an investigation into fraud and violations against USA sanctions against Iran.

Meng is accused of fraud. While there is some fear that the arrest could hurt talks between the US and China to end the current trade war between the two countries, Canadian prosecutors have called Ming a flight risk and have requested that the court place her in a detention center.

The lawyer suggested that Meng has shown a pattern of avoiding the U.S. since becoming aware of the investigation into the matter, has access to vast wealth and connections, and therefore could flee Canada.

Until Meng's bail hearing Friday, the reasons for her arrest in Canada on December 1 were shrouded in mystery.

Meng arrived in the packed Supreme Court of British Columbia as dozens of photographers jostled outside the building.

Before her dramatic arrest in Canada, few in the US had heard of Meng Wanzhou.

CNN, quoting an unnamed official, said the United States saw the arrest as providing leverage in US-China trade talks - although White House trade advisor Peter Navarro has denied any link to the dialogue.

Huawei said on Wednesday that "the company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng". All security costs would be borne by her. The Vancouver Sun reported on Friday that Meng's husband Xiaozong Liu is believed to own at least one luxury home in the city. The U.S. has requested that the 46-year old executive be extradited to the United States.

This longstanding treaty requires that the offence for which extradition is being sought is also a crime in Canada.

The news of Meng's arrest has roiled global stock markets on fears it could escalate a trade war between the U.S. and China after a truce was agreed last week between President Trump and China's leader Xi Jinping.

We'll soon know if the Canadian courts are amenable to that argument.

"I can assure everyone that we are a country (with) an independent judiciary", Trudeau told a tech conference in Montreal.

Huawei has become the world's biggest supplier of equipment used by phone and internet companies.

Asked this week about a possible Canadian ban on Huawei, Trudeau said he would defer to the advice of his intelligence agencies.
