Stevenson suffered ‘severe traumatic brain injury’

Doctors provide update on condition of Montreal boxer Adonis Stevenson

Adonis Stevenson has undergone surgery after suffering a "traumatic brain injury" against Ukrainian fighter Oleksandr Gvozdyk on Saturday.

Intensive care specialist Dr. Alexis Turgeon told reporters today that Stevenson underwent surgery soon after he was brought to the hospital from the arena by ambulance. "In the circumstances, his condition is stable but it is critical", he said.

"His condition requires mechanical respiratory support, deep sedation and specialized neurological monitoring".

The hospital said it is too early to comment on his long-term health. "I urge the media to be very cautious about distributing medical information that does not come from an official medical source".

On behalf of the Stevenson family, the hospital also issued a statement. "They want to be at the bedside of Mr. Stevenson and ask everyone to respect their privacy". The family of Mr. Stevenson, thank you all for your letters of support.

After the fight, Stevenson was hospitalized and placed in ICU, it was noted that he was put into an artificial coma due to a possible brain hemorrhage.

A former WBC champion who was boxing's oldest and longest-reigning titleholder before losing to Gvozdyk (16-0, 13 KOs), "Superman" Stevenson (29-2-1, 24 KOs) had reigned for almost 5 ½ years.

The forty-one-year-old was ahead on the scorecards heading into the bout's final stretch but slumped into the corner of the ring after being caught by a barrage of punches from the challenger.

Stevenson, 41, showed serious concussion symptoms when he was admitted.
