Officials in Navalgund Taluk drain lake after HIV

Indian authorities said they have been busy pumping water out of a sprawling lake in the south of the country in an effort to allay local villagers' fears that it was contaminated after the discovery of the body of a woman infected with HIV a week ago. But the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) spreads only through body fluids and outside the human body, the virus can not survive beyond minutes in air or water.

After the draining process is complete, the authorities will fill the space with water from the nearby Malaprabha canal by December 20, NDTV reported.

According to the district health officials, people are unnecessarily anxious that HIV could spread by drinking the lake waters.

The only option left for the officials is to fill the lake once more from the waters of the Malaprabha Right Bank Canal.

"Three days after her disappearance on November 29, her body surfaced". "Due to the fear of infection, the villagers don't want to use the water, and are releasing it", he said. "The water in the lake is being cleared and will be emptied in a couple of days". The reports claimed that she had been suffering from HIV and that possibly could be the reason why she committed suicide. There is no other way. "It was decomposed, bloated... villagers decided not to use the water until fresh water was filled in the lake", panchayat development officer B. Nagaraja Kumar said.

A former village panchayat member Ravi Kagadal told PTI that the villagers were afraid of contracting HIV/AIDS.

District authorities have made a decision to distribute water from Mallaprabha river, a tributary of the Krishna river, among villagers for the time being. There is another problem, though.

Navalgund tahsildar Naveen Hullur said: "We tried to convince people to drink the lake water but they refused".
