Senior executive from China's Huawei arrested in Canada

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou arrested in Canada says Canada's Justice Deptartment

Canada has arrested Huawei's global chief financial officer in Vancouver, where she is facing extradition to the United States on suspicion she violated U.S. sanctions against Iran, the Globe and Mail newspaper reported on Wednesday.

In a statement to Daily Hive, Federal Department of Justice spokesperson Ian McLeod confirmed that Wanzhou Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1.

The U.S.is seeking Ms. Meng's extradition so as to have her appear in federal court in the Eastern District of NY, according to people familiar with the matter.

"As there is a publication ban in effect, we can not provide any further detail at this time". He added that the publication ban was sought by Meng.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that USA authorities are investigating whether Chinese tech giant Huawei violated sanctions on Iran.

Meng Wanzhou, daughter of company founder Ren Zhenfei, and a vice chair of Huawei Technologies.

Huawei has not responded to Global News' request for comment.

Both The Global And Mail and South China Morning Post previously reported that Meng had been arrested on suspicion of violating the US's trade sanctions on Iran.

The statement said that Meng was taken into custody when she was transferring flights in Canada.

Meng's arrest comes as Ottawa and Beijing have been engaged in exploratory talks on a free trade agreement for the past two years, which would be the first deal of its kind between China and a western country.

The statement, which said it was to be attributed to Huawei headquarters, added that Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export and sanction laws and regulations of the United Nations, US and European Union.

Earlier this year, two USA senators wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warning him that doing business with the Chinese telecom giant would open Canada up to a huge security risk.

Wanzhou Meng, Huawei's chief financial officer, was reportedly arrested in Canada on Saturday.

In August, U.S. president Donald Trump signed an act to ban the use of Huawei components or services that are "essential" or "critical" to the systems they are used.

Separately, the BBC reported that United Kingdom telco BT will not use Huawei's equipment in its 5G mobile network.

This November, New Zealand's government banned its major telecommunications company Spark from using Huawei's equipment, which is described to "have a serious national security risk".

BT was also removing Huawei equipment from its existing 3G and 4G networks.
