O2 has 32 million customers, including people signed up to Tesco Mobile, Sky, Lycamobile and GiffGaff.

Writing on Twitter, O2 said this morning: "Outage Update: One of our third party suppliers has identified a software issue in their system".

Mobile network O2 is experiencing problems which are affecting customers across the UK. GiffGaff has confirmed its service is also offline. Londoners, for example, are finding that the Countdown timers at bus stops are all crippled as they can't communicate with London's transport executive, TfL.

The company, the second-largest mobile network in the United Kingdom, said it was investigating the technical fault. "This issue is being investigated".

Many users took to Twitter to complain about the difficulties, which were first reported at about 05:30.
