New satellite images reveal North Korea is expanding key missile base

Kim Jong-un led the testing of a newly developed tactical weapon last month

Satellite images viewed by CNN showed that the Yeongjeo-dong missile base and a nearby, previously unreported site were not only active but were being upgraded.

Researchers at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey say the evidence of construction at a new facility 7 miles from the Yeongjeo-dong base has not been previously publicly identified, CNN reported.

"So what's that about, Kim Jong-Un no longer being a nuclear threat?"

The South Korean government, which dismissed previous United States media reports about North Korea's undeclared missile bases as "nothing new", said the Yeongjeo-dong missile base has always been on the surveillance list of the South Korean and USA militaries.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has cleared three days later this month to make a historic first visit to Seoul to discuss ridding the Korea peninsula of nuclear weapons, according to a report Wednesday.

"Construction on the previously unidentified site has continued even after the Singapore Summit" between Kim and President Donald Trump in June, Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute, one of the analysts that identified the site, told CNN.

Experts told the U.S. news network that the site´s location made it suitable to host North Korea´s newest long-range missiles, including ones that could carry nuclear warheads.

The US defence department said in a statement: "We watch North Korea very closely but we can not discuss intelligence".

He suggested the meeting could happen in January or February and that the USA could continue to enforce the economic sanctions it imposed on North Korea over its weapons program.

National Security Advisor John Bolton said Tuesday that Trump thinks the North Korean strongman hasn´t met the commitments he made at the Singapore summit. "Meeting Kim again only validates Kim's strategy of using Trump to play for time and sanctions relief, and keep North Korea on the pathway to becoming a de facto nuclear weapon state", Medeiros told The New York Times.
