Iran's Rouhani threatens to cut off Gulf oil

US can’t stop Iran oil exports Persian Gulf will shut if they try – Rouhani

The Iranian president also vowed that ultimately the U.S. won't be able to halt Tehran's oil trade and promised that the country will emerge victorious from the confrontation with Washington.

Hawk's remarks came in response to a statement made by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani earlier on Tuesday in a televised speech during a trip to the northern Iranian city of Shahroud where he said: "America should know that we are selling our oil and will continue to sell our oil and they are not able to stop our oil exports", according to Reuters.

Iran has issued repeated threats to blockade Gulf states and shut the Strait of Hormuz, a major conduit for oil and other exports from the GCC area, in response to global pressure.

The US had initially vowed to reduce Iran's oil sales to "zero" under the bans, but it later backed down and granted waivers to nearly all of Tehran's major crude buyers.

"If someday, the United States decides to block Iran's oil [exports], no oil will be exported from the Persian Gulf", Rouhani said.

Rouhani last threatened to close the Gulf in July when he warned the USA "should not play with the lion's tail".

The president downplayed the economic impact of sanctions, accusing the media of exaggerating the country's problems.

Rouhani has made similar threats previously, especially after President Donald Trump threatened to decrease Iran's oil export to nil.

"The United States should know that we are selling oil and we will sell our oil and it can not block Iran's oil export", he said on Tuesday addressing the people of Shahroud in Semnan province broadcast live on state TV.

"It is a grave and escalating threat, and nations around the world, not just Europe, need to do everything they can to be targeting Iran's missile programme", he added.

Over the weekend, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Iran tested a medium-range missile capable of carrying multiple warheads and striking parts of Europe and the entire Middle East.

Iranian Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said yesterday that United States sanctions were hitting vulnerable people in Iran.
