IPL auction attracts 1,003 players

Lasith Malinga was mulling retirement after he went unsold in IPL 2018 auctions in February

Only 70 slots are available to be filled, with 50 of those for Indians.

Meanwhile, Australia's T20I captain Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell have made themselves unavailable for IPL 2019 after being released by Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Capitals, respectively.

Among the Indians, Yuvraj Singh - after a dismal IPL 2018 - will enter the auction with a base price of Rs 1 crore.

While the newest addition are players from the Northeastern states, Uttarakhand and Bihar, there will also be 232 overseas players, who have thrown their hat in the ring.

Bangladesh (10) and Zimbabwe (5) are the other countries that have seen registrations.

World Cup-bound English players have been requested to return home by April 25, while South Africa players are expected to join a preparatory camp by May 10, and Sri Lankans by May 6.

The eight franchises have a total available purse of Rs 145.25 crore. There are 800 uncapped players with 746 being Indians. Foreign players including Corey Anderson, Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Brendon McCullum, D'Arcy Short, Chris Woakes, Colin Ingram and Sam Curran entered Rs 2 crore.

Among the 232 overseas players, there are 35 Australians, 27 Afghans. And Mohammad Shami, Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha - who has been out of the Indian team due to a streak of injuries - also enter the auction with a Rs 1 crore base price.

However, for the first time in the history of IPL, Richard Madley won't be the auctioneer.

All the franchises have been asked to submit their shortlist from the list of 1,003 by December 10, ahead of the auction.
