BT avoids Huawei for 5G after stripping tech from EE mobile network

BT will strip Huawei devices from its 4G network over the next two years

Therefore, using its technology to build the national 5G network is considered a "threat to national security".

5G networks are coming, but Huawei is getting shut out several markets.

But when BT bought EE it inconveniently acquired a 4G network built with Huawei's data packet technology at the very core of its operations, so it's out in the vans for the engineers to strip it out and replace it all - a task that could take as long as two years. The information was cited by Reuters after initially being published by the Financial Times.

BT and Huawei said today that reports the Chinese kit-maker's products would not be used on EE's 3G and 4G core mobile ops - and that it was out of the running for any bids for the 5G core - should surprise no one. BT pledged to avoid doing so despite working closely with Huawei since 2005, the FT noted.

It added: "Huawei remains an important equipment provider outside the core network, and a valued innovation partner".

Huawei's Portugal chief executive Chris Lu believes that 5G will bring unprecedented changes to the daily lives of people, and to the industry, and the contract with Altice shows the commitment of both companies to the future of 5G in Portugal.

Huawei began working with EE - the largest mobile network operator in the United Kingdom, in 2012, according to the Chinese company, which added that it has provided EE with a series of 3G and 4G network solutions, including core network equipment, as part of the collaboration.

The HCSEC was launched in November 2010 to help mitigate any potential risks in using Huawei technology in the UK's critical national infrastructure.

As part of an "extraordinary outreach campaign", U.S. officials have reportedly reached out to their government counterparts and telecom executives in European and Asian countries where Huawei equipment is already in use, warning them about the "national security risks" posed by the Chinese firm.

In 2010, the British government, Huawei and telecom operators, including BT, established the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) Oversight Board, based in Banbury.

The telco is claiming that it made the decision to remove Huawei in order to bring EE in line with its legacy fixed network, which does not use Huawei technology.
