All public transport to be free in Luxembourg in a world first

Bettel's Democratic Party, the Socialist Workers Party (LSAP) and the Greens, who have together ruled the Grand Duchy since 2013 signed a new accord until 2023 on Monday and settled ministerial posts on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has promised to make public transit a priority and to lift fares on buses, trains, and streetcars by next summer, the Guardian reports.

Luxembourg City, the capital of the tiny, landlocked European country bears the infamy of being one of the worst traffic congestion-hit cities in the world.

Other than their transport promise, Bettel's new coalition government says it is also considering the legalization of cannabis and the introduction of two new public holidays, including "Europe Day" on May 9. Although home to around 110, 000 people, the capital witnesses 400,000 commuters coming to the city to work.

The move is in keeping with Luxembourg's new transport initiatives.

BT avoids Huawei for 5G after stripping tech from EE mobile network
It added: "Huawei remains an important equipment provider outside the core network, and a valued innovation partner". The information was cited by Reuters after initially being published by the Financial Times .

Currently, fares are all capped at a low level of €2 for up to two hours of travel, which covers nearly any journey in the small nation - which is about the same size as Oxfordshire. This summer, the government brought in free transport for every child and young person under the age of 20.

Secondary school students can use free shuttles between their institution and their home.

It's hoped that by 2020, all tickets for public transportation will be abolished, leaving no need for fare collection and policing of ticket purchases and a significant reduction in traffic congestion.

The finer details of the proposal are still to be determined - including what to do about first and second-class carriages on trains.

The CSV, however, lost seats, while the Greens gained three seats.
