Albert Einstein 'God letter' sells for $2.9 million

Письмо Эйнштейна о религии продали за 3 миллиона долларов

Even now, more than 60 years later, Albert Einstein's words carry some shock value-which is why auction house Christie's expects to nab up to $1.5 million New York Times.

"The word God is for me nothing but the expression and product of human weaknesses", Einstein wrote.

A handwritten letter from Albert Einstein about his thoughts on God, religion and his search for meaning sold for nearly $3 million at an auction in NY on Tuesday, Christie's said.

The sentence has been hailed as evidence that the physicist, one of the 20th century's most esteemed thinkers, was an atheist.

"For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstition", he wrote.

Einstein, a German Jew who was 74 years old when the letter was written, also describes his frustration with Judaism. "And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong, and in whose mentality I feel profoundly anchored, still for me does not have any different kind of dignity from all other peoples", Einstein wrote. "Otherwise I can not see anything "chosen" about them".

Gutkind's book "Choose Life: The biblical Call to Revolt" characterizes Judaism and Israel as ethically untouchable entities.

"Collectors worldwide competed very strongly, in the room, over the phone and online, for this finely curated auction which comprised masterpieces and fresh-to-market property across a wide range of subjects", said Sven Becker, head of books and manuscripts at Christie's.

"While Einstein letters and manuscripts appear with some frequency at auction, those of great importance and significance do not", said Klarnet.

While Einstein acknowledges that he and Gutkind had a lot in common "with regard to the factual attitude to life and to human community", he launches into a personal diatribe against religion. But at the age of 13, he "abandoned his uncritical religious fervour, feeling he had been deceived into believing lies".

Spinoza believed not in an anthropomorphic God who intervened in daily lives, but in a God beyond description, one responsible for the sublime beauty and orderliness of the universe. His cosmic religion and distant deistic God fits neither the agenda of religious believers or that of tribal atheists.
